An Evening of Excellence for an Excellent Teacher

Her gait is unforgettable and with a single stare, you would sit up and resume paying attention to the topic at hand. This was the power of Miss Sheila Barrett, otherwise known as Miss B - an economics teaching icon who rose to the ranks of Vice Principal of Campion College.

Miss B devoted nearly 4 decades to Campion, an invaluable contribution which has helped to make it one of the greatest high schools in Jamaica.  Having helped thousands of students either as a teacher or in her role as Dean of Discipline and Dean of Studies, she has helped to enrich and foster the leaders of the world. A stern disciplinarian and skilled teacher, many quaked in their shoes after a “talk” with her. Now they attribute much of their success to her stewardship.

Miss B suffers from renal failure due to hypertension; she goes to dialysis twice per week which places a heavy burden on her resources. This is where the Campion College Alumni Association decided to step in and do something.

An Evening of Excellence

An evening of Excellence is a culinary and musical event  hosted by the Campion College Alumni Association to raise funds for Miss Barrett’s Treatment. It is slated for Wednesday the 18th of May at the Spanish Court Hotel’s Worthington Building. The lineup includes R&B fusion artiste Dr Mario Evon, Reggae Guitarist Dario Morgan and R&B Soul musician Nikhil Asnani - All of whom are past Campion students.

When we heard that it was for Miss Barrett, we knew we had to come on board. Her influence and contribution to our lives is priceless, so we are honoured to pay tribute, using our gifts, in service to someone who has been so instrumental in our education and personal development Mario Evon Gutherie, Musician

Ruth Royes-Browne is also on the lineup and is will be performing her own unique style of Jazz meets Reggae and Gospel. This would be the second time the Ruth, Dario and Mario trio will be collaborating on a performance. Nikhil is a self-taught piano and guitar virtuoso who occasionally performs for charity. He is also the youngest performer and graduated from Campion College in 2011.

Jacqui Tyson is specially catering a cocktail menu for the event to match the ambience of the venue and calibre of performances. She came on board out of solidarity since a very close family member also has to undergo dialysis, and she could relate to the pressure this can place on any family or individual.

This pooled effort also includes the Spanish Court Hotel who is providing the venue as well as Main Event Entertainment Group who will lead the production team. Both owners, Christopher Issa and Solomon Sharpe, are Campionites and were students while Miss B was at Campion.

Tickets cost $4000 and are available at Campion College’s Main Office or from Market Me Consulting at 13 West Kings House Road. The Alumni is determined to raise enough money for her to complete her dialysis for the year. The target is JA$1,000,000 (US$9,000), and donations are also being accepted through a Go Fund Me campaign online, or through direct deposits and wires to the Alumni Accounts.
