Attorney-at-Law, Mrs. Rose-Marie Gibbs will this evening be installed as the first female President for the Rotary Club of New Kingston (RCNK) in its 26 years of existence. Chartered in 1990 as a service club to promote much needed service and assistance to solve some of their community’s toughest challenges, Gibbs’ installment marks a milestone for the club as women were not able to gain membership in the club until 30 years ago.

In keeping with the organisation’s theme for this year, “Rotary Serving Humanity”, the RCNK continues to play its part in the development of Jamaica through the giving of service above self which is the motto that defines Rotary. Over the years, the RCNK has focused its work on implementing projects aimed primarily at satisfying the medical, dental and optical needs of members of various impoverished communities. This year, they will be focusing on pursuing projects geared towards economic development for young persons who are vulnerable and at risk of exploitation.

The service efforts of all Rotary Clubs are concentrated in the focus areas set by Rotary International, namely, the promotion of peace through conflict resolution; disease prevention and treatment; water and sanitation; maternal and child care; education and literacy, and economic and community development.

Rotary International has over 1.2 million members belonging to nearly 33,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.

The Annual Installation Banquet will be held this evening at The Mona Visitor’s Lodge (U.W.I Campus) and will see the Hon. Dennis Lalor, OJ. as Guest Speaker. The event will commence at 7:30, while cocktails will be at 7. Proceeds of the function are in aid of the Club’s charities.
