Viewers of Smile Jamaica this morning woke up in shock as Health Minister Dr.Chris Tufton appeared on the show in a different kind of suit. Fully decked out in sweat pants a dry fit shirt and neon green sneakers the Minister addressed the nation about the importance of frequent exercise and how he is personally making the effort to get in shape.

Flanked by the Director of Nutrition, Minister Tufton explained how he goes walking at least five times a week and someday would like to graduate to running. He encourages everyone to take one hour out of the day to exercise reminding us that one hour is only 4% of a day, that’s not a lot, but it can make a huge difference in your health. There has been overwhelming positive response to the Minister’s lead by example on social media as persons claim to be ‘inspired’ by the level openness and transparency shown.

The appearance was in commemoration of World Health Day being celebrated today, with the theme being ‘Beat Diabetes’. Persons are being encouraged to:

  • Get screened to know if you are susceptible to getting diabetes
  • Be active
  • Eat healthy
  • Don’t smoke
  • Dont abuse alcohol
  • Encourage other persons to get tested for diabetes
  • Those who have diabetes to follow their doctor's instructions and to share information on diabetes, healthy eating and being active.
